I will still be checking my main email address, though the frequency will probably vary. During training (December through February) I should have (ir)regular access. After that it depends on where I am placed and the availability of internet in that area.
Phone
I don’t know about this yet. I will put more info here when I get it. At this time I don’t intend to have a phone. You can get more info about phones at Friends of Guinea.
Envelopes and Packages
Address (after December 1st):
[My Name], PCT Corps de la Paix American BP 1927 Conakry, Guinea West AfricaPlease highlight and write largely the ‘Corps de la Paix American’ part. While the rest may be misread, anything with that line in it goes straight to the Peace Corps and I will have a larger chance of actually getting it.
Whis is to say, whether or not a package will reach me is subject to some uncertainty. When I receive it is also fairly uncertian. The process (according to Friends of Guinea) is that the package arrives in Guinea at the US embassy. Then the Peace Corps picks it up and it sits in the Peace Corps office until I come to get it, or until someone is going to a regional office. If it ends up at a regional office it sits there until I can get it or until someone grabs it on their way to visit me.
That may be outdated if, as the Inspector General’s report for Guinea indicates, there is a Peace Corps specific mail system that may facilitate more rapid (though still slow) mail delivery.
All of which is to say that if you send me something it may take anywhere from 3 to 12 months (2 weeks seems to be the record) to actually arrive in my hands. But please still send me stuff! I will be just as happy, if not more, to receive your packages in a year as I would be when you mail it.
Also, you might want to read fellow volunteer Dorian’s epic mailing post, which will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about mailing things to Guinea (her list of stuff to send is a little suspect though
). Thanks for doing all the work Dorian!
Seriously though, a usb drive with music and pictures and videos on it is just probably just about the coolest thing ever.
